So now begins my grocery store tirade....and might I add that thank goodness I waited a day to make this post else I would have filled it with Seattle bashing and post-decision regret!!!
I knew moving out west would come with certain struggles and a few adjustments...but I never expected this. I really thought that core certainties in life would never be in question. Sure i have a roof over my head and a shirt on my back; lack of air conditioning was a shock to my system but I'm slowly learning the science of window-controlled temperature regulation; safety is an ongoing issue but I always watch my back and carry my mace; but THIS??? This is shockingly scary and absolutely unacceptable.
No Morningstar Spicy Black Bean Burgers and no White Cheddar????? Only Gardenburgers and Yellow Cheddar??? Not even not-so-sharp white cheddar?? What sort of cheese racists live up here anyways???
No Publix, no good cheese or black bean burgers, no Mellow Mushroom, no good generic tonic water, no liquor past 8pm even on weekends....I mean it might sound dramatic - but it's a good thing I didn't know about these things before I moved out here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Add to that Diet Coke 12 packs at $7.99 (REALLY!), a COMPLETE lack of anything even resembling an east-coast pizza or pizza joint (and no, the one that calls itself east coast but has no beer or wine or liquor or decent chairs is NOT sufficient), no Sweeetwater, and roads that are completely devoid of any jacked up pick-em-up-trucks or rebel flags, and - WELL - what's a southern girl to do??
Just as I was ready to pack my bags and return back south....enter Safeway. I call it the Publix of the north you see. I guess it only took 5 (!) tries to find it (I seriously checked out 4 different supermarket chains including fred meyer (aka the wal-mart on crack - more on that later) all to no avail (and no, mom, I didn't check out "Whole (Paycheck) Foods" or its more expensive cousin "PCC", but come on - I still haven't gotten my first paycheck so give me some time before I blow it all at a grocery store!)) I GUESS it was worth the wait. Very friendly staff everywhere (ala publix), plenty of beautiful produce, SEVERAL kinds of white cheddar including Cracker Barrel (yummy) aaaaaaaaaaaand my Spicy Black Bean Burgers!! I quickly bought every box they had. Now I'm stocked up just in case Safeway crashes to the ground at any moment. SOOOO much better.
Phew! Crisis averted. Guess I should can call off the national guard now. I feel better. Don't you?
Who knew I could write so much about groceries??? Guess too much computer time and not enough human interaction are starting to get to me ;)

Now, about the Diet Coke...if I remember correctly, you get FREE Coke, Pepsi and Starbucks at work riiiiiiight? So, do what any normal person would do and just take a few home with you in one of your gigantic purses and quit your bitching :) j/k

Uwajimaya also great ethnic,oops thats asian. If all else fails, hop a ferry to Bainbridge and my fav store w/organic bulk. You just need me to come explore 4 U. Yes, I do feel MUCH better.. Chinerika- that is what you get for being a putz and still ignoring the hot powdered donut stand. I swear, when I get out there, I'm going to buy 6 dozen, and hide them all over your apartment. Oh, and since I'm finally getting Clayfus back out to the cabin for fishing, you best find another "Phone***(PG Censor) Buddy", cause his phone will be hidden in the stink bait all weekend.
